I think that the special niche we occupy in the scientific world is that
- we want to advance biology, and understand biological questions and traditional methods in computational biology
- we love deep learning, and can use it to give traditional methods modern superpowers
- we love math and probability, and so aren’t afraid to develop new models.
This is a powerful combination for research, in part because it’s not so common. On the other hand, this triple intersection limits the population of people who are truly going to thrive in the group. We are hoping to find those rare people in that intersection!
Culturally, we are a “high expectations (for mentee) and deep devotion (from mentor)” research group. Please read our expectations of group members. Our work to create a positive group culture has been recognized by a McDougall Mentorship Award.
Trainee position
We cannot currently accept a new trainee in the group, but we always appreciate people introducing themselves as potentially interested, even years in advance!
Data engineer and AI engineer position
We have a Data Engineer - Bioinformatics and an AI Engineer positions available. Although these people will be hired through HHMI and located at Janelia Farm in Virginia, they will be working with us closely to enable next-generation protein evolution models.
Here are some photos to give you an idea of group life:
We are housed in the beautiful
Steam Plant Building
overlooking Lake Union.
